University of North Carolina branch triples classroom participation to nearly 100 percent. In lecture halls at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington (UNCW), students’ laptop computers seemed to create barriers between the students and faculty, contributing to a student participation rate of about 30 percent. Then, UNCW shifted to Windows Mobile-powered Pocket PCs, and
began testing a new student response system that enabled the students to respond anonymously to lecturers’ questions, with the results instantly displayed. The feedback helps lecturers see how much the class understands, so they can review a point or move ahead. The faculty also receives the benefit of greater student participation, with in-classroom participation soaring to nearly 100 percent
